    The early Cycladic settlement at Dhaskalio, Keros: preliminary report of the 2008 excavation season

    The 2008 excavations on the small island of Dhaskalio opposite Dhaskalio Kavos on the Cycladic island of Keros are reviewed. An account is given of the survey, recording many walls of the early Bronze Age, and of the excavations, continued from the 2007 season. Excavations at the summit of Dhaskalio revealed a substantial building 16 m long and 4 m wide, within which was discovered the ‘Dhaskalio hoard’ comprising a chisel, an axe-adze, and a shaft-hole axe of copper or bronze. Study of the pottery reveals continuity, within which a sequence of three phases within the Early Cycladic II and III periods can be established. Excavations were continued and concluded within the Special Deposit at Kavos South with the recovery of many more special but fragmentary materials including marble vessels and figurines. Specialist studies for the geomorphology, geology, petrology, ceramic petrology, metallurgy and environmental aspects (botanical and faunal remains, phytoliths) are in progress. No more fieldwork is planned prior to final publication of the 2006 to 2008 seasons

Having for several years been engaged in opening what is known as the McKenzie Salt Springs & Des Chutes road I have found leisure to explore this section and short dis- tance North and south and believe it to be full of interest to the natural- ist, not to say to all who read your correspondence. The chief objects of inter- est, appear to me, 1st, hot salt or other mineral spring 2d, Falls of the McKenzie and and tributaries, 3rd The three Sisters. 4th The carvings of [3]the mountains by gla- ciers and 5th The Glaciers themselves. The longest of the three of these which I have visited lies about 23 miles due east of us and 76 miles from Eugene City, same direct- ion. I have estimated its length at 4 miles, width near a mile and think its motion as [illegible] action than generaly accorded to the alpine ones – Of course this is’nt much of a glacier but could I have found it at the head of the Yosemite Valley where I looked for it in ’58 nothing more could have been desired.     The finite temperature QCD using 2+1 flavors of domain wall fermions at N_t = 8

    We study the region of the QCD phase transition using 2+1 flavors of domain wall fermions (DWF) and a 163×816^3 \times 8 lattice volume with a fifth dimension of Ls=32L_s = 32. The disconnected light quark chiral susceptibility, quark number susceptibility and the Polyakov loop suggest a chiral and deconfining crossover transition lying between 155 and 185 MeV for our choice of quark mass and lattice spacing. In this region the lattice scale deduced from the Sommer parameter r0r_0 is a−1≈1.3a^{-1} \approx 1.3 GeV, the pion mass is ≈300\approx 300 MeV and the kaon mass is approximately physical. The peak in the chiral susceptibility implies a pseudo critical temperature Tc=171(10)(17)T_c = 171(10)(17) MeV where the first error is associated with determining the peak location and the second with our unphysical light quark mass and non-zero lattice spacing. The effects of residual chiral symmetry breaking on the chiral condensate and disconnected chiral susceptibility are studied using several values of the valence LsL_s.Comment: 41 pages, 10 tables, 13 figure

    Self-presentation concerns may contribute towards the understanding of athletes' affect when trialling for a new sports team

    A vignette-based experimental manipulation was used to examine the impact of self-presentation concerns on athletes’ affect and cognitive appraisal. Others’ reactions were described, so as to emphasize or de-emphasize self-presentation concerns. Athletes given cause to believe that they were generating unfavourable impressions experienced more negative affect and reported more threat-based appraisal. Athletes exposed to information de-emphasizing self-presentation concerns experienced more positive affect and reported more of a challenge-based appraisal. The findings indicate a potential opportunity (e.g., de-emphasising self-presentation concerns, providing a supportive interpersonal environment) that others (e.g., coaches and teammates) could act on to improve athlete experiences during sports trials

    The clinical- and cost-effectiveness of functional electrical stimulation and ankle-foot orthoses for foot drop in Multiple Sclerosis: a multicentre randomized trial

    Objective: To compare the clinical- and cost-effectiveness of ankle-foot orthoses (AFOs) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) over 12 months in people with Multiple Sclerosis with foot drop. Design: Multicentre, powered, non-blinded, randomized trial. Setting: Seven Multiple Sclerosis outpatient centres across Scotland. Subjects: Eighty-five treatment-naïve people with Multiple Sclerosis with persistent (>three months) foot drop. Interventions: Participants randomized to receive a custom-made, AFO (n = 43) or FES device (n = 42). Outcome measures: Assessed at 0, 3, 6 and 12 months; 5-minute self-selected walk test (primary), Timed 25 Foot Walk, oxygen cost of walking, Multiple Sclerosis Impact Scale-29, Multiple Sclerosis Walking Scale-12, Modified Fatigue Impact Scale, Euroqol five-dimension five-level questionnaire, Activities-specific Balance and Confidence Scale, Psychological Impact of Assistive Devices Score, and equipment and National Health Service staff time costs of interventions. Results: Groups were similar for age (AFO, 51.4 (11.2); FES, 50.4(10.4) years) and baseline walking speed (AFO, 0.62 (0.21); FES 0.73 (0.27) m/s). In all, 38% dropped out by 12 months (AFO, n = 21; FES, n = 11). Both groups walked faster at 12 months with device (P < 0.001; AFO, 0.73 (0.24); FES, 0.79 (0.24) m/s) but no difference between groups. Significantly higher Psychological Impact of Assistive Devices Scores were found for FES for Competence (P = 0.016; AFO, 0.85(1.05); FES, 1.53(1.05)), Adaptability (P = 0.001; AFO, 0.38(0.97); FES 1.53 (0.98)) and Self-Esteem (P = 0.006; AFO, 0.45 (0.67); FES 1 (0.68)). Effects were comparable for other measures. FES may offer value for money alternative to usual care. Conclusion: AFOs and FES have comparable effects on walking performance and patient-reported outcomes; however, high drop-outs introduces uncertainty

    We discuss Quantum Chromodynamics calculations using the lattice regulator. The theory of the strong force is a cornerstone of the Standard Model of particle physics.     Opening the Rome-Southampton window for operator mixing matrices

    We show that the running of operators which mix under renormalization can be computed fully non-perturbatively as a product of continuum step scaling matrices. These step scaling matrices are obtained by taking the "ratio" of Z matrices computed at different energies in an RI-MOM type scheme for which twisted boundary conditions are an essential ingredient. Our method allows us to relax the bounds of the Rome-Southampton window. We also explain why such a method is important in view of the light quark physics program of the RBC-UKQCD collaborations. To illustrate our method, using n_f=2+1 domain-wall fermions, we compute the non-perturbative running matrix of four-quark operators needed in K->pipi decay and neutral kaon mixing.     The K→(ππ)I=2K\to(\pi\pi)_{I=2} Decay Amplitude from Lattice QCD

    We report on the first realistic \emph{ab initio} calculation of a hadronic weak decay, that of the amplitude A2A_2 for a kaon to decay into two \pi-mesons with isospin 2. We find ReA2=(1.436±0.063stat±0.258syst) 10−8 GeVA_2=(1.436\pm 0.063_{\textrm{stat}}\pm 0.258_{\textrm{syst}})\,10^{-8}\,\textrm{GeV} in good agreement with the experimental result and for the hitherto unknown imaginary part we find {Im} A2=−(6.83±0.51stat±1.30syst) 10−13 GeV\,A_2=-(6.83 \pm 0.51_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 1.30_{\textrm{syst}})\,10^{-13}\,{\rm GeV}. Moreover combining our result for Im\,A2A_2 with experimental values of Re\,A2A_2, Re\,A0A_0 and ϵ′/ϵ\epsilon^\prime/\epsilon, we obtain the following value for the unknown ratio Im\,A0A_0/Re\,A0A_0 within the Standard Model: Im A0/Re A0=−1.63(19)stat(20)syst×10−4\mathrm{Im}\,A_0/\mathrm{Re}\,A_0=-1.63(19)_{\mathrm{stat}}(20)_{\mathrm{syst}}\times10^{-4}. One consequence of these results is that the contribution from Im\,A2A_2 to the direct CP violation parameter ϵ′\epsilon^{\prime} (the so-called Electroweak Penguin, EWP, contribution) is Re(ϵ′/ϵ)EWP=−(6.52±0.49stat±1.24syst)×10−4(\epsilon^\prime/\epsilon)_{\mathrm{EWP}} = -(6.52 \pm 0.49_{\textrm{stat}} \pm 1.24_{\textrm{syst}}) \times 10^{-4}. We explain why this calculation of A2A_2 represents a major milestone for lattice QCD and discuss the exciting prospects for a full quantitative understanding of CP-violation in kaon decays.Comment: 5 pages, 1 figur
